Shirt numbers are about 25 centimetres high. Because there has to be the possibility to put two figures on the back of the shirt, the width of each figure is limited to about 15 centimetres. This means that the ratio between width and height is about 3:5.

The standard figures of a regular typeface have a bigger ratio, and therefore they have to be condensed a little. This is sometimes done by horizontally scaling the figures, but by doing so, the vertical strokes become thinner while the horizontal strokes retain the same thickness, and the figures are distorted.

So, it's better to use a proper condensed typeface, in which stroke widths are adjusted to the character width.

Left: The black 2, designed to be used as a shirt number, is more condensed than the same figure from a regular typeface (white).

Right: When a regular figure is narrowed by horizontal scaling, the vertical strokes become thinner, which results in an unbalanced form.
